Who is an Energy Systems Engineer?

Energy Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that includes many disciplines, especially mechanical, electrical-electronic and chemical engineering. Due to this, it focuses on a wide variety of fields of study. Energy systems engineering is responsible for production and consumption of energy from all sources in a sufficient, efficient and low-cost manner, and for researching and developing environmentally friendly, innovative and sustainable energy systems. The energy systems engineer designs, installs and operates the above-mentioned systems by making the necessary calculations; S/He is the person who solves the problems of the sector and directs the energy sector by managing the technical, technological, legal and economic processes of the sector.

Energy Systems Engineering Fields of Study

Students graduating from the program will learn about energy production and planning of the public and private sectors, energy efficiency, alternative energy sources. It is aimed that graduates to be at a level that can be employed in departments related to alternative energy sources, the selection, development and use of relevant energy systems and to be competent to work in research and development departments related to energy systems and materials.

Program graduates may be employed ;

  • In many ministries, especially the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources,
  • In energy-related government institutions such as the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), the General Directorate of Petroleum Affairs (PIGM), the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK),

(BOTAŞ), Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKİ), Turkey Electromechanical Industry Inc. (TEMSAN), Turkish Petroleum Refineries Inc. (TÜPRAŞ),
  • In privatized organizations such as Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO),
  • In private sector and state enterprises such as thermal power plants, hydroelectric power plants and nuclear power plants where energy production is carried out,
    As a researcher and designer in the field of innovative, renewable and sustainable energy systems such as wind, solar and geothermal,
  • As a researcher in universities and R&D organizations.

About the Department and Graduation Requirements

The program education language is 100% English; Thus our language preparatory class is mandatory. However, the students who get the required score from the English proficiency exam may be exempt from the preparatory class. As of 2023, there are two professors, two associate professors, two doctoral faculty members, one lecturer and two research assistants in our department.

Students must earn 240 ECTS for graduation. 162 of these credits consist of must courses and the remaining 78 credits consist of field and non-field elective courses. To complete the program, our students are required to complete an internship of 40 working days. Detailed information, curriculum and course catalog information of Ankara University Energy Systems Engineering program can be found here.
